People celebrate World AIDS Day in Istanbul, Turkey(土耳其), on Wednesday. A United Nations report has revealed that nearly 33.4 million people are infected by the HIV virus throughout the world.


The Paris City Hall is lit with red lights for World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, in Paris. More than 80 iconic(图标的) landmarks across 13 countries will be lit up to promote awareness of the ongoing fight against the AIDS epidemic(流行病).

Indian Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told parliament(国会) on Nov. 24 that nearly 53,000 children in the country are HIV positive. He admitted that the major source of the infection "is vertical(垂直的) transmission(传播) from their infected pregnant mothers". While India may have stemmed(遏制) the AIDS epidemic "it miserably failed in prevention of parent to child transmission of HIV", says the AIDS Society of India.


Afghan acting(代理的) Health Minister Suraya Dalil speaks during a ceremony marking World AIDS Day in Kabul, Afghanistan on Wednesday. The Afghan Ministry of Health has recorded 636 HIV positive cases and estimates around 2000 - 3000 HIV and AIDS cases in the country, Dalil said.


In the dangerous Korogocho slum(贫民区) in Nairobi, Kenya, older women are being increasingly targeted by rapists(强奸犯) who believe that attacking an elderly woman can cure AIDS. To protect themselves, the women practice self defense moves on each other in this March 3 photo. One Nairobi hospital treated 437 rape victims older than 60 last year.


German pop star Nadja Benaissa was found guilty of(有……之罪) knowingly infecting an ex-boyfriend with HIV by having unprotected sex without telling him of her status. The 28-year-old, who performed in the band No Angels, received a two-year suspended sentence(缓刑). Here, she waits for the beginning of another session of her trial in the district court house in the western German city of Darmstadt on Aug. 25.


Josephine Napkonde, age 80, is raising five children under the age of 10 on her own following the deaths of her husband and daughter from AIDS. Napkonde, shown Sept. 29 sells charcoal(炭), shirts and trousers on her roadside stall(摊,棚) in the slum of Ngendo in Kenya to earn some money so she can afford paying for food, clothing, medical bills and other needs. An estimated 300,000 children in Kenya have been orphaned by AIDS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.


Lady Gaga performs at a charity concert for people living with HIV in Tokyo on April 20. The American singer has made AIDS awareness her cause(事业) and is one of the faces of MAC cosmetic's Viva Glam campaign, supporting people living with HIV and AIDS. She's spoken publicly about taking an HIV test and encourages others to do so too. She's also joining Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Usher and others in vowing to sign off of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter on Dec. 1, World AIDS Day to support Key's HIV charity, Keep a Child Alive. The participants will sign back on when the charity raises $1 million.
