A yellow tang(刺尾鱼) swims near Maug Island in the Mariana Archipelago(马里亚纳群岛).
In this undated photo released by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, coral(珊瑚) is seen off Jarvis Island, one of seven islands strung along the equator in the central Pacific Ocean. Parts of three remote and uninhabited Pacific island chains are being set aside by President Bush as national monuments to protect them from oil and gas extraction and commercial fishing in what will be the largest marine conservation effort in history.
A tremendous mussel(贻贝) biomass adorns(装饰) the lava(火山岩) ridges at the crest(顶峰) of submarine NW Eifuku volcano north of Uracus near the proposed monument. These seven-inch mussels are so densely massed that they obscure(使暗) the bottom. The white galatheid crabs are 2.5 inches long.
Dense populations of coral and pink coralline algae(珊瑚藻) are found along the outer slopes at Rose Atoll in American Samoa(萨摩亚群岛). The fan-shaped coral pictured here is Pavona duerdeni.
Butterfly fish swim near the Johnston Atoll, one of seven islands strung along the equator in the central Pacific Ocean.
The Kingman Reef(金曼礁) is seen in this undated photo.
Pink corals on the Palmyra Atoll(巴尔米拉环礁) in the Pacific Ocean.
Rose Island, seen here from outside the atoll rim, is one of two small islands within the lagoon(礁湖) of Rose Atoll in America Samoa.
Rose Atoll derives its name from the dense populations of pink-colored coralline algae that form impressive formations along the outer atoll sploes in American Samoa.
