The United Kingdom voted in a referendum Thursday to leave the European Union, according to the latest numbers of counted votes.
Shortly after 6:30 a.m. local time (1:30 a.m. ET) the Leave side had more than 17 million votes, exceeding the 16.8 million needed to win -- which is more than 50% of the vote. Remain had more than 15.9 million votes.
Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, who was a major force in the Leave movement tweeted, "We've got our country back. Thanks to all of you. #IndependenceDay."
